Committee Memberships

The Bow Valley College Academic Council is responsible for making recommendations and reports to the College's Board of Governors with respect to any matter that the board refers to the Academic Council, including academic policy related to the following matters: standards and policy respecting the selection and admission of students;courses and programs of instruction or training provided or to be provided by the board; academic awards.
The Bow Valley College Academic Council is also responsible to review proposed programs of study to be offered by the college and make a report respecting that review. They also make recommendations and reports to the Bow Valley College Board of Governors on any other matter the Academic Council considers advisable.

The Board accepts responsibility for defining the vision, mission and objectives of the College and delegates to the President & CEO the responsibility for defining and implementing the means for achieving these, within the limitation of policy and ethical practice. The Students’ Association has the right for one member to sit on the Board and act as the representative for the students of Bow Valley College. Board members commit to act in the best interests of the college. In doing so they view each other as colleagues who share the responsibility for stewardship of the college.

The student awards committee is made up of various representatives from the college at large which includes a student association representative appointed by Students’ Council. Some responsibilities include reviewing the current awards guide and present recommendations for the new publication, reviewing the website, awards list, updates on current awards and their availability as well brainstorming ways to ensure current information reaches students. The committee generally meets bi-monthly or more depending on the need of the committee and topics previously discussed.

The Green Team is a committee which designs activities and information sharing specifically related to recycling initiatives. The committee is made up representatives from as many areas of the college. Students are directly impacted by the recycling programs as are staff and faculty and therefore it is imperative that the student voice is heard. The Students’ Council has a appointed a representative to ensure continued concerns are heard as well as positive feedback regarding recycling and creating a more environmentally friendly campus. The SA office has been pro-active in making our office and student area environmentally conscious by turning off all vampire lights on a daily basis, using only green cleaning products for daily wipe downs of surfaces, bottle collection, online updates and news, auto back to back photo copying and printing, agendas and minutes sent electronically and more. The Food Service Committee has representatives from many departments of the college as well as ensuring that student voice and concerns are heard via a representative appointed by the Students’ Council. The Committee discusses topics related to food service, pricing, advertising, and special events, as well facilities and operations connected to food service. The committee meets bi-monthly or as needed to ensure concerns and communication is relayed between the food service provider and those who use the services.

The Advisory Committee is sanctioned by the Students’ Association by-laws and acts in advisory capacity only to Students’ Council. The primary purpose of this committee is to advise Students’ Council on issues that may affect the Association’s strategic or purpose and the fulfillment of its fiduciary responsibilities. Membership is made up of six public members, all members of the Students’ Association Executive Committee and meet on an ad hoc basis a minimum of twice yearly. The Calgary Student Caucus is made up of student representatives from five public post secondary institutions and also includes the Graduate Students’ Association from the University of Calgary each guaranteed a vote per institution. The representatives are generally the executive councils from the various institutions and an appointed representative by council from the BVCSA. Topics include a universal buss pass, which would ensure fair and equitable pricing for all public post secondary students, along with fair housing and pricing and other issues that the caucus feels is representative of the students at large. The CSC meets on a monthly basis and has generated dialogue among institutions as well as great opportunities for networking with other students’ councils in the Calgary area.

ASEC is a provincial lobby organization the BVCSA holds membership and voting rights on issues presented at conferences. The SA President is the voice of BVCSA and has the opportunity to attend leadership conferences and serve as a Board Member of ASEC. For more information please see the link on the BVCSA home page.
